The idea of an association gained so much support that an inaugural meeting was held in Nelspruit on the 15th of March 1985.  This meeting was attended by 109 interested hunters and resulted in the birth of the “Lowveld Hunters and Game Conservation Association”, under the auspices of the Confederation of Hunters associations of South Africa (CHASA).

It was no small task to get the show on the road, but dedication of some of the founder members, soon saw the association established and gain direction.

The Association showed dynamic growth from the start, and soon became one of the stronger associations in CHASA, to which it contributed constructively and participated in numerous projects.

The Association gave guidance in the formulation of the CHASA proficiency test.  It also launched the Buffalo Project.  Although no buffalo have yet been hunted, the project is far from being dead.  It is a direct result of this project that buffalo have been allowed out of the Kruger National Park in the recent past.

Other projects in which the Association took an interest and contributed towards were:

  1. The re-establishment of Roan Antelope in the Kruger National Park.
  2. The Quagga project, where an attempt is being made to resurrect the extinct Quagga by selective breeding of Burchell’s Zebra.
  3. The Establishments of the Oribi conservancy in the Piet Retief district.
  4. Contribution towards the Fire-arm Amendment Bill.
  5. The establishment of a Hippo Conservancy
  6. The establishment of game in the Witbank Nature Reserve.

“THE TELSCOPE NEWS”, the Association’s quarterly news letter, keeps member sinformed about various activities.  It also contains interesting anecdotes, hints and information on all aspects of hunting and conservation.

The Association has arranged numerous hunts for its members and has also administered the hunting in the Pongola Nature Reserve.

Training courses are held annually for the young hunter.  Hunting in the Loskop Nature Reserve has been the privilege of these fortunate bys and girls.

The Training programme for Seniors is enthusiastically supported.  Members look forward to the monthly shoots and the Annual Interbranch Competitions ensures a large gathering of the big guns to show who is who.

The annual trophy competition draws a large number of high quality entries and shows the pride and enthusiasm of members.

The highlight of the year has always been the Annual Dinner Dance and rice giving.  This prestigious event allows all to honour achievers.

All our Branches keep the Associations flag high.  Their contributions are valued in maintaining and raising the high standard that the Association strives towards.

The Association is also the only association that can say that they have Accreditation for Dedicated Hunters, Fire-arm and Ammunition Collectors and Sport shooting.
